How to use these services

We know how important it is to find the right therapist. To help ensure that things go smoothly, we'll walk you through what we've found to be a matching process that has worked well for others.

 
 
 

To keep the process manageable, we suggest you begin by filling in the search fields according to your priorities:

  • Location: How far are you willing to travel for your sessions?
     
  • Professional Title: Are you looking for a specific type of qualification Licensed Clinical Social Worker; Psychologist; Psychiatrist?  Are you uncertain about the differences between one professional title and another? We define some of these titles on this site to help you in your search. Some insurance policies only pay for services by certain types of professionals, and knowing this in advance can help you chose accordingly. In other cases, you might not have any coverage and want to choose a therapist who can work within your budget. Do you need someone who can prescribe medication? Knowing what you are looking for can narrow your search field. If you are mostly concerned about finding someone with trauma therapy skills close to you, then keeping your search terms as broad as possible would be preferable.
     
  • Specialty: You will find a very comprehensive list of “specialties” that you can search for within our therapist search system.  These search terms can help you find someone who has skills within a defined skill set (i.e., Couples Therapist, Veterans, etc.)
  • Type of Therapy: You are engaging in an important potentially life-changing activity by beginning therapy.  Choose someone who can expertly guide you with a skilled, knowledgeable approach while you face what may be your most challenging issues.  Therapists with a trauma specialization generally have training within the field.  They may have completed comprehensive training through the Traumatology Institute (Clinical Traumatologist) or specific workshops or courses like EMDR or Time-Limited Trauma Therapy it is important that you work with a skilled and trauma informed provider.
  • Languages spoken: When dealing with a complicated traumatic history it is often easier to work in the language where you have the greatest comfort and skill. If you cannot find someone who speaks you language of origin within a reasonable distance for you to travel you might find some Remote Therapy options through E-therapy or phone counseling offered by some therapists in our database.
  • Remote therapy:  Some of the TraumaLine1 counselors offer online, E-therapy or phone counselling, allowing you to receive their services from a remote location
     
  • Gender of the therapist: In some cases, service seekers have a gender preference when working with a therapist.  This might be especially true in cases where trauma survivors were victims of violence and they have a preference to work with a therapist who is not the same gender as their perpetrator.

Contact the therapists of your choice by using our confidential internal e-mail system or directly by phone (if their number is listed). You should have a list of questions prepared before contacting them. Obviously, the answers to your most pertinent questions will help you determine if you’re a good match. This initial interaction between yourself and the therapist will help you choose the appropriate professional to assist you.
